Want to go deeper? How to Stop a Passed Pawn With the Queen

Rules
  • You play White (king and queen).
  • Black races to promote | if it queens, you lose.
  • Use checks to win a tempo and round up the pawn.

How to Play

1

Stop the pawn

A Black passed pawn is racing toward promotion. Your White queen must capture it before it reaches the back rank.

2

You move first

White always moves first. Use the queen’s long-range power to intercept the pawn’s path immediately.

3

Watch for the Black king

The Black king may be escorting the pawn. Don’t walk the queen into a square where it can be chased away.

4

Capture within 2 moves

Each puzzle requires the queen to win the pawn within 2 moves. If the pawn promotes, the puzzle is failed.
